Hugh Black was born in Rothsay, Scotland, in 1868. He received his M.A. from Glasgow University in 1887 and then went on to study at the Free Church College. Following his theological studies and ordination, he served at Sherwood Free Church in Paisley and then with Dr. Alexander Whyte at St. George’s Free Presbyterian Church in Edinburgh. In 1906, after ten years of fruitful and powerful ministry, Black accepted a call to Union Theological Seminary in New York City as professor of practical theology. Black wrote numerous books—among which is 'Friendship,' first published in 1898. Hugh Black died in 1953.
